It was unexpected and complimentary when I was asked if I would be prepared to judge at an “unusual” show being organised in support of rescue.
This was to be a really Fun Day, with all sorts happening: Agility, sausage-eating, dogs with tails being shown, dogs without tails being shown, cropped dogs, baby dogs, pet dogs, castrated dogs, you name it! Many of the import dogs were allowed to “double handle”, and to make it fair so were some of the pet and rescue Dobes who had received no show training.
Temperaments overall were good, and it was good to see some “fire” in the Open Dog class, up until then it was a bit of a “mothers’ meeting!
My co-judge Arthur Hall & I were to have the pleasure of judging some lovely dogs, with an excellent entry-23 in Open Dog! So a really big ‘Thank you’ to all who worked so hard to make this day so memorable.
CLASS 1 BABY DOG
Lovely chunky puppy with extremely good front and rear angulation, providing a nicely balanced picture for such a baby. Clean strong topline and super head planes. Well handled and presented, and this combination should have a bright future together.
COCKNEYOKA BEN AINSLEY
A more elegant type of puppy, but with clean lines and strong limbs. Somewhat over-come by the situation, but his couldn’t hide his quality.
CLASS 2 PUPPY DOG
SANT KREAL CERTERO OF SATINEA (Rus. Imp).
I had a difficult choice to make between first and second in this class, but the overall balance and angulation just pipped it for the first. Good depth for such a youngster, clean topline and correct tailset.
Although a nice short-coupled dog, this boy although balanced fore and aft, lacked the angulation of the first which affected his movement somewhat.
CLASS 3 VETERAN DOG
ROAD SWEEPER TRIGGER AT COCKNEYOKA
Stocky balanced dog with straight true limbs, and a pleasing head and open expression. Could be shorter in loins, which could have been stronger on the move, but shown in good condition and handled nicely.
CH JOWENDY’S I’M SO EXCITED AT ZAJONTI JW
Lovely head set on strong but elegant neck. Keen expression and stood up well, asking to be looked at. Lost out to winner on slightly weaker hocks, which again showed on the move.
CLASS 4 YEARLING DOG
COCKNEYOKA HIGHLANDER JW
Very smart young dog, difficult to fault. Head planes good, neck set and shoulders flow nicely into clean topline and tailset. Still immature, but should be impressive when he muscles up. One to watch.
Another more elegant type, lacking the bone and sharp lines of the winner. Good Colour but slightly light in eye. May well mature into a fine dog as he has got “Class”.
CLASS 4 INTERMEDIATE DOG
SUPETA’S JIMI HENDRIX AT SONAKINT
Very smart boy in lovely condition. Well angled fore and aft. Deep brisket and strong loins and back. Neck arched into clean well-laid shoulders
HEILSTORM DU WOT A THRILLER
Fabulous head on this dog and being cropped really enhanced “look of eagles”. Only lost out by having a slightly dropped croup.
CLASS 6 OPEN DOG
BLACKJACK BLUFFER VON JAHRESTAL
Elegance and strength combined to make this boy my best male of the day and Res. Best in Show! Dry wedge-shaped head set on elegant neck. Great depth and in hard condition. Limbs straight and true, and moved with reach and drive. Although he gave his handler some work to do, there was no denying this dog’s quality.
The best limbs and feet of the day, what a sound dog! Beautiful head and expression. Again good angulation and movement, and only lost out by being a shade longer than the winner which slightly spoiled the complete picture.
– Roger James, Halsbands Dobermanns
First I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge bitches, which I enjoyed so much. It’s been 12 years since I last had a Dobe and it brought back so many memories of the preparation of getting ready for a show, especially dragging the dogs kicking and screaming from their warm beds in the early hours!! (Had to do the same thing with the wife!)
It was nice to see my co-judge Roger James and his wife June, who have great knowledge of the breed and who once owned and bred Halsband Redwing; one of the best brown Dobes I have ever seen.
With Roger’s full approval CH/IRCH/VANHALLEN BLACK VELVET WITH DARKISS JW took full honours on the day. She caught my eye the minute she came into the ring; beautiful outline with substance, good head and long neck flowing into a level top line and tail set, well angulated fore and aft and a deep chest, cat like feet, she was handled superbly and worked all around the ring in perfect unison. She is a credit to the breed, well done.
CLASS 7 – BABY PUPPY
ISABELLA DU WOT A THRILLER
Brown. Why do they have to grow up and outgrow the pyjama case they have at this age? Moved well considering it was her first time in the ring. Plenty of substance for one so young.
CLASS 8 – PUPPY BITCH
EBRILL BARKIN MAD – Brown. Lovely outline, well angulated, good top line and moved well.
NEWFORD FAIT ACCOMPLI – Brown. Similar to 1 be interesting to see where they fare at other shows.
CLASS 9 – VETERAN BITCH
CH/IRCH/VANHALLEN BLACK VELVET WITH DARKISS JW
She caught my eye the minute she came into the ring; beautiful outline with substance, good head and long neck flowing into a level top line and tail set, well angulated fore and aft and a deep chest, cat like feet, she was handled superbly and worked all around the ring in perfect unison. She is a credit to the breed, well done.
LYNFRYDS SOME LIKE IT HOT FOR KYRICA – Good reach of neck, level top line, well up on feet and moved well.
CLASS 10 – YEARLING BITCH
IZRALIGHT QUEEN OF HEARTS – Clean lines on this girl with a nice overall picture, moved well across the ring, well handled.
OUROUSE SHABBY CHIC WITH MARTIFERS – Similar to 1 just pipped to 1st place.
CLASS 11 – INTERMEDIATE BITCH
FOLLYWOOD BEAU JANGLE AT DOBERTEERS – Substantial bitch with good conformation, nice head with a dark eye and ear set, moved with drive.
SUPETAS SWING OUT SISTER AT MATTACANE
CLASS 12 – OPEN BITCH
OUROUSE HANKY PANKY – Honest Dobe of good quality, wanted to be there, lovely outline with really good movement.
AMAZON SWEET SWEET CANDY TO BAIKEL – Again, an honest bitch, place could change but on the day I pipped her on movement.
– Arthur Hall, Andalucia Dobermanns
